Theft
is a huge problem for the motorcycle sport sector, especially with
off-road machinery. Currently there is no registration system and once
a machine has been stolen, it is virtually impossible to discover its
fate. More than likely it will be sold on - complete or in component
form - to an unsuspecting buyer.
The theft of motorcycles, including competition bikes, is growing
rapidly with over 37,000 machines stolen last year – predominantly due
to the ease with which criminals can remove manufacturer's
identification numbers.
The expense and difficulty of insuring competition bikes mean that you,
the owner, would be unlikely to have cover against theft.
In a major industry/motorcycle sport initiative, Datatag and Racing
Organisations, such as the sport's governing body the ACU, have joined
forces to combat the growing problem of off-road and competition
motorcycle theft and the alarmingly low recovery rates. More
importantly the ACU plan to make Datatag compulsory on all competition
bikes in the future, in a bid to stamp out theft in the industry.
For the competition bike sector, Datatag has been specially configured
to meet the unique requirements of motorcycle sport. The Datatag system
uses a number of the latest identification technologies including
state-of-the-art electronic transponders programmed with a unique code
for each machine.
And here's the good bit - working closely with these racing
organizations, race clubs and practice tracks we are building a
national team of vetted Datatag officials who will scan bikes at events
looking for stolen bikes or parts. These officials have been equipped
with special scanners that store stolen property information and will
make the job of identifying stolen bikes easier and more importantly,
help the Police with their prosecution: it will literally drive theft
out of our industry.
The technology developed in
the racing system means that existing Datatag systems, such as
Superbike or Scooter, will require upgrading in order to benefit from
the full protection of this initiative. To overcome this, and as a
service to riders, it is planned that a Datatag Racing upgrade kit will
be launched to fit to a machine already protected by an existing
Datatag system.
KTM UK was the first company to fit Datatag to its entire range of 2005
competition machinery following this revolutionary initiative. And
recently at the 2005 Dirt Rider Expo Yamaha Motor UK announced their
official range of YZ and WR Competition motorcycles would also come
with Datatag as standard.
The adoption of Datatag for probably the most dynamic range of off-road
machinery is a major step forward in combating the high incidence of
competition and off road bike theft, which has seen few machines being
recovered in recent years.
